vista recovery disk will not work or install on new AF hard drive

Have a HP Pavillion ac6355 which started to crash, now windows vista will not load at all. Gets to the HP options, and the original hard drive is detected in the BIOS menu (also works when put in an external dock), but it wont go pass HP options menu (F10, F11, etc) and just asks '@ress alt+ctrl+delete to restart' after this.
The newer advanced format drives will not work with the recovery disk I created from the partition and just can't seem to get anywhere fixing it or recovering vista onto a new hard drive (as the older 512 byte sector types are really hard to find).

Can anyone please help with what the best way or what to do get windows onto a new AF hard drive or even boot up on the detected original hard drive now not booting up recovery/windows??
