Vista startup sound does not work

Hello, the Vista startup sound does not work. According to the sounds menu in the control panel, everything is in place for it to work. My speakers are fine plus all other Windows sounds work.

is the box that states play windows startup sound still checked in sound properties!

Yes, that box is checked. A few weeks ago the sound was working intermittently; at times it sounded a little choppy, now there's nothing. The windows logo and sound were almost simultaneous. Now after the logo (with no sound)there is a brief "please wait" pause before flipping to the password screen.
