I have a laptop that is giving trouble on my startup. The laptop runs on Windows Vista and I don't have a recovery disk for it. I do have a recovery disk for Windows 7 and I would like to know if it is possible to use this Windows 7 disk to repair my Vista start up? I can't just format my laptop as it has sensitive data on it and I don't want to cause more harm by trying this and it turns out to do more damage.

You could boot from a live disc and save your data before trying recovery. I always use Linux Mint which you can download from https://linuxmint.com/download.php . Burn the ISO you download to a DVD, boot from it, and you'll be up and running without having to install anything or know anything about Linux. It has a user interface very similar to Windows that you can use to copy your data to a flash drive or external hard drive.
I don't know about the recovery disc from Windows 7, but I know with Windows 7 and later you can create a recovery disc from the System applet of the Control Panel. It's been too long since I've used Vista to know whether it has that ability or not.

Good luck.
