Vista to 7 upgrade activation questions.

Hello all, first time poster here with a quick question.

Just built a new pc and was going to put my Windows Xp professional on it, and then upgrade to 7 but I ran into some problems. Some of the devices seemed to be incompatible with XP and it would freeze at 35% of the installing devices phase.

So, I used a vista disk from a laptop I have to put vista on the pc in hopes that I could put it on and then upgrade to 7 and put in my new key. So my question is, does my Vista have to be activated to upgrade to windows 7? Is it possible to use the same code as the one on my laptop and then upgrade to 7? Thanks for your help.

That would not be the legal way to do it.

Upgrading from XP pro IS legal (as long as it's not used elsewhere) and the proper way to do it... but as you say you'll not get it to install properly.

So instead you do what is called a Clean Install from your upgrade media. This is legal and allowed... but please keep in mind that you HAVE upgraded the XP license and it cannot now be used elsewhere.

Thanks for the quick replies.

How can I do this though if I can't even get XP on the machine? I understand that you can do a clean install with the upgrade disk, but how do you put in the old XP activation code?

As it stands right now, my computer has an unactivated version of Windows Vista on it. What do you recommend my next move is? Put the upgrade disk in and do a clean install? If I did that, how would I use my XP key to prove I owned it?
