Visual indication of sound direction possible?

I am deaf in one ear. As a result, I cannot tell direction of sound, at all. For that reason, I am pretty much unable to enjoy FPS titles, as I'll be dead long before figuring out the direction of incoming.
Is there a software driver or similar solution that will present an onscreen display, such as a dot representing the player, with radials of differing length or intensity indicating direction of sound? The mention of something called "sonic radar" in conjunction with Asus' new Z87 boards makes me wonder if anything like this is already available.
If so, a followup question is, would use of such an aid constitute "cheating" in an online game?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That's interesting so I started looking.

Visualizing Audio in a First-Person Shooter With Directional Sound Display.

Is what I found. They have an interesting PDF (not sure if you've read it) where they tested a product to basically what your talking about for the hearing impaired / def.

I couldn't find a download so I'm not sure if their product is readily available for the public. But I'd still like to learn more so I'll be checking back to see what you and others find :).
