What’s more, Viveport relies on Valve’s Steam VR drivers, so you still need to have Steam installed on your PC to use it.

LOL. With partners like that, who need competition? I'll bet Valve is sure wishing they had some other Vive HMD hardware makers. Sure, you can use Oculus' or MS' VR hardware with it, but again both have their own competing content distribution systems & MS' HMDs have an added overhead penalty for inside-out tracking.

After all the work that Valve has put into VR, it's got to sting that their ability to replicate the success of Steam on the PC is anything but certain.
