whenever i install vlc, it completely takes over the computer, opening emails, web browsers and google chrome in just a vlc player file. the only way to stop it doing this is to uninstall vlc.... so now whenever i want to use vlc i have to install it, watch what i want to, then uninstall it, which is a PAIN.

originally, all the email, internet browser, google chrome etc icons were all shown as witches hats, (the vlc icon). I used this link: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7/
and downloaded the 'EXE' file. It added the changes to the registry, but it only changed the icons down the bottom back to their original form, so they still open in vlc when clicked on. When i clicked on the email icon, it still just opens in a vlc file again.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this, using the registry? and please be precise in your instructions!!! thankyou

Poat number 2 here explains how to make the needed changes from VLC. Hopefully this will help you out. Next install don't allow it to take ownership of all files and you should be fine.

hy bro, i think you are using an windows operating system . then goto the control panel, or click on start menu and click on the Device default programs,

or in control panel go to Programs and click on Default programs, then click on set default programs , click on vlc or whatever you want then set defaults for it.
Hope it helped you *-^

it is nothing to do with file associations, or the file download. file assocations is only for different video formats etc like DVD's or music files. quite obviously, a normal computer doesnt even give u an option to open emails with any format but Microsoft Outlook because otherwise you wouldnt even be able to see them. Get me?? but that is what my computer is doing!!

and its not the file download because thats the same download i use with all of my computers.

It does have to do with the file association. An outlook email is simply a .msg file. That file association can be set in the control panel-->default programs.
