VOB to MPEG

I'd like to copy VOB files from a DVD to my harddrive without any loss
and as little re-rendering as possible. At first I just copied the VOB
files and renamed them to .mpg - This seemed to work, but when
importing the files to my video tool (ULead MediaStudio) parts of the
files where missing?! When playing the files back with Mediaplayer
nothing is missing, so all data are available only Mediastudio does'nt
recognize this :/ My guess is that the file is not 100% mpeg
compatible?!

The solution im using for now, is to load the vob into VirtualDub-MPEG2
and saving it as .avi. After editing the avi files, I render them back
to MPEG2 so they can be written to DVD. Apparently VirtualDub can't to
write to .mpeg?! (using the same bps, thus no rerendering).

I'd prefer to keep the original MPEG data without rerendering them to
..avi - not only does it take time, It could very well result in a lossy
file compared to the original.

So my question in short : Is there any quick way to extract a proper
..mpg file from a .vob file (or otherwise make the .vob into a compliant
..mpg file) ?

Assuming that they aren't encrypted:

VideoReDo can, and there are others. VideoReDo may be
the fastest though. www.VideoReDo.com

TMPGEnc DVD Author has an "Add DVD video" process that
creates a folder with sequentially listed .mpg files. You can quit
TDA after it has "added the DVD video" and use the .mpg as you
wish.

P.S. If they are encrypted, use DVDShrink, or some other
decryption program first.
