Sounds like it may be a text message. Go to messages and check in box.
See if you may have gotten a text message. Also some phones have a
memo/voice notes record feature that will also leave an indicator.

I had that problem a couple of years ago with an old TDMA phone (3360). I
called my own number and left a new voice mail. Then I called in from the
cell phone and deleted it. At that point, it cleared.
I have heard that the NYC area changed voice mail treatiment. Are you in
that area?

It's not a text message indicator. I know the difference.
