The Tom's Hardware Community Picks: Best RTS Games

To help navigate this brave new world for gaming, Tom's Hardware is in the process of assembling the definitive list of PC games in a number of genres. We've already put a few lists together, but the number of titles is lacking. While the Tom's Hardware Editorial team is few in number, the Tom's Hardware Community is legion.

With your input we hope to assemble a list of the best and worst PC games that can truly be called definitive. Over the next few weeks we'll be collecting Community feedback across multiple categories. Once we have a sufficient number of submissions, we'll have the Community vote on the most popular, with a showcase of the winning games on the Tom's Hardware homepage.

This thread will decide the Community Picks for the Best RTS games.

To help get you started here are the Editorial Team's list of best Best RTS games on the PC:

We know this list is just a start. Do you have any suggestions? Comment below and give us your best picks!

Red Alert 2 is high on my list.
I think you should include Sup Com:FA in the list as well though.
Although if we wanted definitive than I would say C&C 95, it more or less created/popularized the genre.

On another note I never received my Steam gift card for winning a competition several months ago.

Dawn of War series. not played a better RTS. Red Alert 2 is a classic as well but not as good as the Dawn of War series.

Dark Crusade is personal fav. old enough now that you can get the whole series on steam for around $10 :D

The list, as it stands, is already epic! I've been playing C& RA2, Yuri's Revenge for the past two years after making an ISO of the original game disc bought back in 2004. In all honesty, it was better than RA2, in most aspects.

The rest of the games...well I grew up with them, so they can't be tampered with :p

I'd like to add some to that list.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
Stronghold Crusader II
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising
Halo Wars
Rise of Nations: Rise of Leegends

I'm sure the community will all add more and ofc there are more but this is what I can recall after so many years being away from them.

In that order:

1) Total Annihilation
2) Supreme Commander
3) Ashes of the Singularity
4) C&C
5) Starcraft 2

While Starcraft 2, and its predecessor had a nice story and were pretty engaging, Total Annihilation really set the bar in terms of RTS capability. It created an awe factor that was unprecedented in the genre. Supreme Commander upped the ante, and added everything that i'd have wished to see in Total Annihilation. Ashes perhaps carry's that tradition forward. The scope in those 3 games makes the likes of Starcraft feel minimalistic.

C&C was ground braking, and in that sense it was memorable; especially including those amazing FMV's.

RTS games are probably one of the most ignored game genres in the community. We see a lot of test benches using FPS games as test models but it would be nice to see someone at least include one RTS game in his hardware review.

I very much enjoyed the command and conquer line of games, both traditional and the Red Alert Line.
While most of my other suggestions are already mentioned. I can add

Lord Of The Rings Battle For Middle Earth I and II

Oh my god I spend so much time on strategy games I could die for...

The list is just too long..

It seems the newer games lost the charm of the olders games that were simple but very tactical and fun.

1 Total Annihilation
2 Red Alert 2
3 Supreme Commander 2
4 Command and Conquer Tiberian Dawn
5 Dune 2000
6 Command & Conquer Genereals
7 Starcraft 2
8 Age of Empires 2
9 Warcraft 3
10 Dark Reign
11 Seven Kingdoms II
12 Earth 2150
13 7th Legion
14 Dogs of War
15 Magic and Mayhem
16 Beasts and Bumpkins
etc.

It's so hard to conclude to a list :)
