Hey guys, good evening from Alaska, USA.
I'm currently using a VPN on my HTC One M8 phone. And obviously you need, Wi-Fi for it to work --my phone's I.P. (198.XXXXXXX) is different from my laptop's I.P. (205XXXXXXXX).

My phone and laptop are in the same table right now and I went to some IP websites and looked up each location of the IP.

Laptop = Alaska, USA, Phone = Virginia, USA

So my question is, if I watch or download a bunch of stuff online using my phone. Will that add up on my Wi-Fi data and bill? Or do I get unlimited data because I'm connected to a different IP?

Please point out facts and causation. I don't mind looking like an idiot. Thank you!

No, it still adds up on your local connection.

Your phone is using a VPN tunnel to connect to another network over your current internet connection. For your phone to receive a file or stream video those bits and bytes still have to come from the VPN site to your phone over your local internet connection. Thus it counts the data.

The VPN is usefull when you need to connect to someplace and use it as a local network (like a telecommuter that needs access to its work's networked files and resources). A VPN is also useful if say you are in mexico and cant access the USA Netflix stream; with the VPN you can have the network in the USA connect to Netflix server and validate it as a USA connection, and then it forwards the traffic to you over the VPN tunnel.
