VR capable GPU performance

I don't know much about virtual reality gaming, so I was wondering if a vr capable gpu only performs well with a vr set and poorly on a monitor or if it will work just as well on a monitor.

No, it will perform well on a normal monitor, too, not just for VR. "VR Ready" is just marketing that says a GPU is capable of VR, but that doesn't mean it's not capable of non-VR stuff.
