If you have a 512mb gfx card and a 1920x1080 monitor, would playing games in a window eliminate the slow down from lack of sufficient vram?

Playing in windowed mode won't help, your best bet would be to lower the resolution and other settings like AA and AF.

Correct, in today's current generation games you'd want at minimum 2GB of VRAM.

I only said it was for the current generation games because they are more graphic intensive. 1GB should get you by if playing on a 1920x1080, but you will have to lower graphic settings or filtering settings.

My 1.28GB GTX570 does just fine at 1920 x 1080, even if your card runs out of VRAM doesn't automatically mean your game will become unplayable, it'll just cache textures to your system RAM or SSD/HDD which will in turn lower performance (but may still be playable)
