Question VSync on or off?

Hi everyone, my graphics card has GSync, but on a game I'm playing I notice in the setting there is VSync. My rig is an i9 and 4070 GPU with a 244hz 2560 x 1600 display. I note that when turning off VSync on a particular game it is a lot less jerky. Why is this? Is it better to leave it turned off or is it on a game by game basis?

V-sync matches the fps output of the GPU to the refresh rate of your monitor. the disadvantage of V-sync is that it locks your fps to your monitor's refresh rate. G-sync does the same thing without locking your fps. G-sync is almost always better than V-sync and should be enabled if yu have a compatible monitor.

Thank you, how do I enable it? Under the Nvidia control panel it says ‘let each application decide’ for GSync.

I don't 100% know because I have never used an Nvidia GPU, but there should be an option in a dropdown menu that should say something along the lines of enable or force enable.

Scratch that, the above is for VSync, it says let each application decide. I am using automatic select under Nvidia control panel, so GSync only works when I select Nvidia GPU display only. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to things like this.

You should be able to go to the display menu in Nvidia control panel and select setup G-sync and then enable G-sync compatible. (assuming your display is G-sync compatible.)

This raises a point I never thought of. Does V-Sync need to be turned on in-game to trigger G-Sync, will it conflict, will G-Sync override the setting, or is G-Sync always running (if you set it to 'All Window Mode') and should remain off in-game

(Same thought/question for AMD also, I have both).

The general consensus is to enable both Gsync and Vsync, but set a FPS cap to 2-3 FPS below the monitors maximum refresh in order to stay within the upper FPS limit where Gsync takes effect.

I use Vsync much more now, back when I was on 60hz (Last time was 2016) Vsync was a no-go due to input lag, but on 165hz or 240hz, you don't really notice it in any single player games, competitive shooters, always turn Vsync off.

Vsync or a frame limiter are required to keep the upper bounds of your refresh rate in check. Personally I switch between them depending on the title and what I'm trying to do performance vs power consumption wise.
