Hello,

I'm about to buy second hand(probably ex miner) - VTX 3D R9 290 X-EDITION. It is really cheap, but i never heard of the brand and its the only r9 290 with aftermarket cooling i noticed for that price, do you have any experience with it? Is it reliable? I heard the reference r9 290 are REALLY hot, so i though this will be better choice.

Thanks, are the temps lower than the reference cards?

I've recently bought a used, mined Sapphire Dual-x 280x. It was used for mining for about a year, I believe.
It worked perfectly, but was absolutely unable to accept any overclock higher than the factory one (reference: 950MHz, factory: 1000 MHz). Up to 1020 it was OK, but any little bit higher and it would start having issues (specially with BF3).
Still, at stocks speeds it was great, not a problem, and games worked perfectly fine.

I decided to sell this card, because I believed that the fact that it was so unable to overclock would mean that it probably had not a very long life ahead of it.
Still, I wouldn't have sold it had I not been able to sell it for more than I paid, as it was a great card.
Now I upgraded to nVidia, but that's another story.

This is just to give you some data about cards used for mining. You will most likely get a great card that will work with no problems, but there is always a chance to get a bad card.

The temperatures are about the same haha.

Well personally I would go Gigabyte (but that's just because they're more well known) but VTX should contend just as well.
Mind you that both these cards have already been used, Ive never brought a used card ever unless it was from a friend and it was proven that there was no faults or damages. The Gigabyte card is a card I DO have information on and it runs quite cool under load compared to the reference, but then so should VTX.

Although wherever you're buying it from used may be perfectly fine (I'm just paranoid). Buy whichever one looks cooler to you because by what you get they're about the same. As for mining cards, Ive seen many people buy them and they served them well. Mining is pretty intensive but if it works, it works, and for the price. You just can't complain.

My advice: just buy whichever you think looks cooler and by your own personal preference.

Are you saying VTX 3D R9 290 X-EDITION has the temperatures as the reference? If that's the case I'll stick and wait for another gigabyte, since that one was sold pretty quickly. I just don't want another heating GPU that will give me troubles later, although it has warranty.
