Hi,

I'm going to buy a new PC 🙂 (AMDXP2000+) but I've got a few questions about the cooler, a Vulcano9 whit smartfan2. There is a smal temp.probe, but Thermaltake sais that I have to put it under the CPU (thru the pins) and they say that it isn't good for the probe to place it between the core and the HSF. What is the best thing I can do. I also want to use som articSilver3, but do I realy have to do it like they say. And if I place the probe between the core and the HSF, do I have to put som TIM on both the core and the core??? (Maybe a video can help us)

P.s.: Sorry if I made you mad whit the last question, I understand that, cause if everybody ask you for a video...

Dear psycho,

We at tom's hardware guide have decided to take up your request for a video. You should recieve in the mail a copy of "the quest for the holy grail" by Monty Python. Whatch this 20 times end to end. By the final viewing this world will seem like a hazy dream and your computer problems will be "solved".

PS. We will also send along a package of sea monkeys. They are useful for fixing consumer electronics problems.

Seriously though...
If you can, have the dealer install the heatsink for you. If not then here are the answers to your questions....

I also want to use som articSilver3, but do I realy have to do it like they say.
Absolutely...Thermal compounds only work when they are properly applied. If you put them on incorrectly, then you can make matters worse than if you hadn't used any goo at all. Here are the instructions <A HREF="http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm" target="_new">http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm</A>

Install it the way they reccomend. The probe on the fan is already insulated so there should be any mods that you have to do. There is a good article on this at <A HREF="http://www.overclockers.com/articles606/index03.asp" target="_new">http://www.overclockers.com/articles606/index03.asp</A>. DO NOT put any goo on the pins, socket, or probe. Doing those things would help your cpu the same way that putting it in the microwave would. On last bit of advice...I found this out the hard way. When installing your heatsink, before you push down on the clip with the screwdriver, place a narrow strip of cardboard (the box your heatsink came in works well) under the tabs of your cpu socket. That way, if your screwdriver slips off, you only gouge the carboard instead of your motherboard. Hope this helps.

it takes like 2 minutes to use silver 3, dont be lazy and DONT let the dealer do it if you want it done right, my bro got a pc from directron and there was fragtape between the core and the cheap ass aluminum hs, it was a xp 2100! it would have melted the instant he started the thing had I not inspected it. do it yourself the rewards are great

OOOh...Fragtape...I never heard it called that, but that's a pretty good descrption. Yeah...If you want it done right, do it yourself, but if you don't know what your doing, even a dealer install is better than the fragfest that was my first PC build.
