I'm new here and i don't know which forum to post to.
I am working on an HP Z230 SFF workstation. I bought a W10 disc. I installed the OS. The machine has a key sticker. The key doesn't work.
How do i get the key from the disc?
searching netted me many possible solutions, but downloading apps is being blocked by my security.
Can i please get some help?
thanks

The key sticker is probably for a different version. Pro vs Home for example. A legitimate copy of Win 10 will have a sticker with it.

The Z230 didn't have a HDD when i got it. I don't know which OS it had when new. I found an HP W10 disc online for just a couple bucks expecting HP software to run on an HP machine. All the stuff i have read says the key is on the disc. I just need a way to find it that won't get me blocked at every turn.
Thanks for looking at my post.

PS: i just looked at the sticker. The original OS is W7. Should i start there? i have lots of OS discs with many ways to activate the OS.
Thanks

Ah.
Win 7 license no longer works to activate a Win 10 or 11 install.
That stopped a few months ago.

Your only recourse is to purchase a valid Win 10 or 11 license.
(Win 11, depending on if the hardware is Win 11 capable)

What you purchased is almost certainly a mostly scam. Whatever Win 10 license is involved is an OEM, tied to whatever hardware it originally came with.

From where, for how much, and why?

The HP almost certainly came with its own OS license.
All you probably needed was a reinstall of whatever version it came with.
I got the disc from ebay, it was $12.00. Because i didn't have any W10 software. I do have all the other OS discs, starting with W95.
Thanks

That $12 did not include a valid Win 10 license.

And the license is the only thing you actually pay for.
The install is freely downloadable from MS.
That's the thing. I have had no luck trying to get W10 to download. Apparently i'm doing it wrong. No key came with the disc i got. I have seen several discs w/key for $30.00 or so and also flash drives w/ OS and key, which
i do not trust. Maybe i'm wrong. Frankly I don't agree with giving up so much for software&key. Micro/gates has enuff money already.
Thanks for the help

To create a valid Win 10 install:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Absolutely Free.

The license, however, is a whole different thing.
Unfortunately, Microsoft no longer sells Windows 10 licenses.
You may be able to find it on Amazon or Newegg.
About $100. Sorry, but that IS what a valid Windows license costs.

You can get cheap keys on kinguin, thats what I use for my business. Anyone saying you need to pay 100$ for a key is not telling the truth or is just a Microsoft shill.

Thanks for the info, i will check that out. Honestly, i've never given that much for a key. I have been lucky about that. I have gotten a couple machines that had OS discs in drives that i found only after starting up the cpu.
This one time, i got a disc from a hacker (i didn't know about) that had just a ton of stuff i learned to use. I made soo much money from just that one disc. So, i guess Microsoft finally caught up with the deceptive practices of some of us...<🙂->
C ya later...

I just remembered why my W10 downloads wouldn't work. It won't download to unsupported hardware, and that's why i bought the OS disc. Which i don't get. The OS from the disc i got is what i am typing from now. So why won't W10 download on non supported hardware?

What IS your hardware?
Win 10 runs on very old systems....dating back to at least 2009 era.

Allegations abound for Kinguin and other grey resellers selling keys that aren’t legitimately acquired. I’m not a fan. Link

Personally I wouldn’t be running a business with capital from grey suppliers.

(TLDR: resellers crowdsource licences from various third parties with access to corporate, academic, and promotional keys - and therefore are beyond their original Terms of Use.)
