w2k and powering down at shut off

I have this older computer that uses an ATX psu but it uses AT style keyboard. While I can turn on Advanced power management it doesn't shut down properly when I tell it to shut down. It works great when I load 98 on the computer but not 2000. I've tried installing 2000 by pressing f5 at the time it says press f6 for scsi/raid drivers but it doesn't display a choice for apmi hal. Any suggestions as to get it to power down?

I decide to test it with xp, XP will Hibernate and power off correctly but will not shutdown and power off properly. Hopefully someone knows what I can do in either 2000 or XP

just get an ATX keyboard and attach it with a ps2 to whatever adaptor... keyboards dont cost very much really.

I'm sorry an ATX keyboard would be something I'm not familiar with, did you mean a PS2 keyboard? hmmm I have one of them actually and I will try that.

Some of the older AT keyboards didn't have the "Power" key on them. For some reason windows won't turn off power even with the Start/Shudown function if it doesn't detect the newer keyboards.

The simple solution is to buy a new keyboard.

didn't buy a new keyboard, but got one that actually has the power/sleep/wake buttons. Still didn't work. This is my oldest working computer which I use for experiments and just wanted to see if I could get this thing to power off correctly. Here are the specs.

CPU : AMD k6-2 300 mhz

Memory : 128megs 1x64mb, 2x32MB (??brand??)
NIC : <A HREF="http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=30&prid=31" target="_new">Linksys LNE100TX v4</A>
Sound : <A HREF="http://www.americas.creative.com/support/welcome.asp?centric=14" target="_new">SoundBlaster AWE64</A>
Drives : Creative (BTC) 48X Noisey P.O.S. and then I use removable hard drive bay so that I can switch between hard drives.

The system had this problem before I switched to a removable drive bay. I saw on a site some options to also try. One was to get a newer power supply. I've been wanting to get a new power supply for one of my computers anyway. The site also stated that a mismatch in memory could be the cause. I been looking into getting some 128dimms for all three slots on this just to fill it with as much memory as I could and it's starting to get cheap again. *shrug* I'll let you know what my problem was if I ever get it fixed.

I don't think the keyboard has anything to do with powering down. I'd lay money on the power management. Either a driver issue, or simply an unsupported ACPI.
I've run across many a PII or PIII class system that simply will not shut down correctly in Win2k. It's not uncommon at all.

Some older motherboard were AT/ATX supported both power supply and did only have AT keyboards sockets , some did have PS2 Mouse sockets, but the problem you are having is not caused by the keyboard, it seems to be a bad driver or a conflict and shutdown. Check at the web site of your motherboard they maybe a work around there.
