W2K SP4 removed successfully but it still shows SP4

I have an application that I found out will only run under W2K SP3, after
successfully removing SP4 by means of "Add Remove Programs" and rebooting the
server, typing WINVER still shows SP4. When trying to reinstall SP3 in the
hopes of fixing this I get the message that "Setup has detected that the
Service Pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are
applying to it. You can only install this update on Service Pack 3."

Does anyone have any clues on how to remove the reference to SP4.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thank You for the quick response. I've tried both a Manual and Fast repair
and both options still produce the same result in that the OS thinks it has
SP4 installed. I'm using a genuine Microsoft Windows Server CD with
integrated SP3. I noticed when selecting both options that the install
process went rather quickly which I believe tells me the install process
doesn't see any differences in the files it's trying to replace so it
doesn't. I then tried just a Windows 2000 Server CD with no integrated
service packs of which I noticed it did take more time to do the install but
still rather quick I thought.....this also produces the same result. I'm
surprise the machine still thinks it has SP4 when the uninstall process had
no errors and completed successfully.

Could there be a Windows registry tweak I could do to fake the box out in
thinking it doesn't have SP4?

You can't use an integrated install CD-Rom for this. I think if the OS was
installed from integrated install media then it may not work as well.

Get with the developer on the issue.

Dave,

The base install was done with Windows 2000 Server SP3 then SP4 was applied
afterwards. Your saying I shouldn't expect this to work if I used an
integrated SP CD? Struggling with why this would matter since I had SP3 to
fall back on.....have to assume only a few do base installs with plain jane
Windows 2000 Server CD then upgrade to SP4.

If at some point you reapplied SP4 then the image captured in the
'uninstall' folder would also be SP4 which may explain why still SP4. Also
an in-place upgrade isn't possible to do with an integrated install CD-Rom.
