W7 install - How to remove XP leftovers???

Hi guys,


I have just wiped my hard drive, and made a clean XP installation which I updated to SP3. At the moment there are no APPS etc that I have installed.

It's an old 2003 Dell and booting from USB is not an option because the BIOS does not support it.

I now wish to update XP to W7 by running the DVD from inside XP.
(For varous reasons I cannot do a clean W7 boot /install - it's NOT an option)

Obviously this update from XP is not the same as a 'Clean' W7 installation - but it will have to suffice for various reasons.

After the installation I wish to remove any unneccessary XP junk left behind.

Are there files that W7 creates with all the unnecessary leftovers?

If so what are they called and can I safely delete them?

After I've done this I will install all the usual apps etc.

I would appreciate some helpful advice here.

(PS... once again, whilst it is possible to READ files, it's not possible to boot either the W7 DVD or USB)

There is no upgrade path from XP to 7. If you install 7 it will simply dump any XP files in to a directory called Windows.old and perform a clean install. Deleting this directory will remove any trace of XP.

Once Windows 7 is installed, click start and enter "clean" in the Search programs and files field.
Click "Disk Cleanup"
C drive should be selected, click OK
Click "Clean up system files"
C drive should be selected, click OK
Select all options with size over 1MB and follow the prompts to delete.

Windows 7 should hopefully recognise anything no longer required and allow you to clean it up using this utility.
