Waiting for AMD price drops

So I've been thinking of upgrading to the AMD x2 4400+ for a while now. I've actually been waiting until the rumored release of a new x2 CPU to push prices down; but apparently we're only getting the FX-60 as the last s939 chip?

Is it true that there won't be a faster x2 coming out for s939?

Can we expect the recent release of the FX-60 to cause a price drop in the mid-range x2s? If so, how long would it usually take? I don't want to buy a processor that's going down $100 next week or anything..

I myself pondered this question too. I was going to choose the AMD Athlon 64 4400+, but instead I purchased a 3700+ San Diego, and it's good enough. As for prices dropping, maybe AMD wants the prices to drop, but according to a couple E-Tailers (Newegg specifically) they are not lowering prices by much. Newegg has decided to charge $1,400 for the FX-60, and maintain a $1,000 price-tag for the FX-57. I would just purchase a cheap, single core processor now like I did, or get the X2 3800+ and install the new patches for games to make them Dual-Core ready (mind you it's only Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2 for now).

As for another X2 for s939, it looks as if a 5000+ version will be released running 2.6GHz on both Toledo and Manchester cores, the only thing is that both versions (even Toledo) of the 5000+ will have 512KB L2 Cache per Core. As for Socket AM2, it seems in April of this year they are re-releasing 4200+, 46, 48, an 5000+ for Windsor with 512KB/1MB L2 Cache. As well as the FX-62 running at 2.833GHz and later this year, FX-64 running 3.0GHz (Both Dual-Core) and the 5200+ running 2.667GHz.

'Course all that could change or may have already changed, but it's something to look forward to.

That's interesting - I don't really care if they have a smaller cache (because I don't plan on buying them ), but it would be nice to see them come out and make everything else cheaper. So you think that the 'FX-60 = last s939' thing is bogus? I wonder if any of those new chips would be following close behind the FX-60's announcement or not..

Haro,

Get a dual core Opteron instead. They run cooler, less voltage, comes with 2 x 1mb cache, and OC much better than the X2's. Same deal with the single core versions.

It's the best chip for the 939 w/o spending over $1000 on the FX.
