Wake-on-lan on a non supported motherboard

I am planning on purchasing a new motherboard for its features and looks in my build upgrade. The only issue is this motherboard doesn't support wake-on-LAN. I could buy a $12 network card that does support wake-on-LAN to solve this issue, with the only issue being I don't know if it will work.
I had contacted the manufacturer about this issue and they replied with:

"That is most likely correct.

This feature is just not part of the design of the board."

This doesn't help me much considering I still don't 100% know if it will work. I would like to know if I am able to purchase a wake-on-LAN network card and use it on a motherboard that doesn't support wake-on-LAN together to remotely turn my PC on.

I would think if the network...

I would think if the network NIC card supported Wake-On-LAN that the associated driver would handle that function. There should be a list of supported motherboards for the NIC card. Wake-on-LAN is a common feature in networking.
