I don't think that word means what you think it does. Is the total budget for a system build, or buying peripherals for a laptop?

You can certainly use external sound cards with a laptop or desktop, not generally something people do. Internal sound cards can offer more quality and options than onboard sound, but most motherboards come with adequate on board sound chips, and many offer premium audio chipsets that compare favorably to discrete cards.

Not really sure where the motherboard comes into it, but if you bought one, we will need to know what it is to be able to build around it.

I think the motherboard was an ASUS Maximum VIII Hero with LGA 1151socket.
