I'm looking to buy a new CPU. i'd like to go with an intel i5-4670 (or better) over AMD because it'll mostly be used for games, and from what i've read intel are better at single-thread processes (which games are?). my motherboard has an AM3+ (942) socket though, which, as far as i've been able to tell, wont support intel CPUs.
do you think i should go with the AMD equivalent of an intel i5-4670 (which i think is the FX-8350?), or would it be worth the money to get a new motherboard so i can then get an intel cpu?
or is everyone i've said wrong? :)

current specs are:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version 10.0.15063 Build 15063
System Type x64-based PC
Processor AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor, 3500 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. P1.00, 17-Oct-12
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.1.7601.17514"
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
Total Physical Memory 7.96 GB
Available Physical Memory 1.64 GB
Total Virtual Memory 15.9 GB
Available Virtual Memory 7.06 GB
Page File Space 7.96 GB
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Motherboard is an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0

apologies if there's any irrelevant stuff in there, and thanks!

The AMD equivalent of the 4670 is the R3 1300X and you can't put one of those on your motherboard. You can't get better performance (with new parts) without buying a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Whether it's worth it or not depends on what games you play and how much the money means to you, we can't decide that for you. For some people the extra 20-50% FPS improvement is worth the $300-400, for some people it's not.
