Hey, my ultimate goal to add another monitor to what I have. I would like the second one to be vertical though, and leave the first horizontal. I really want to know all of the ins and outs before I purchase a monitor.

Currently:
30 inch dell monitor that is 1600p
2x gtx 970s in SLI

My questions:

- How exactly does it work? I know in windows you can set the OS to rotate whichever way on the monitor, but it seems like I'd be telling it to have on regular and one rotated.

- Does the second monitor have to run at the same resolution as the first? I'd love to buy a cheapish 1080p for the vertical monitor, but does that mean i have to lower the resolution of the 1600p any time I use them together?

- How do you connect them to the graphics cards? Can I leave it in SLI and just have two connected to the main card? Or do I need to turn off SLI each time?

Advice:

Anyone know a good monitor to do this with? I don't need a pretty one (I'll game and such on the 30 inch 1600p solo). I want it large as possible while still being fairly cheap and reliable. Vertical orientation built in would be great.

ANY help and advice would be so appreciated!!

It seems in the newest drivers AMD is currently supporting PLP setups.

If you want to do odd widescreen things, this site is a must for you.

This is pretty new stuff, don't be surprised if not many are doing this. I hadn't heard of AMD supporting PLP setups yet. But it seems it came out 2 drivers ago. To my knowledge Nvidia still doesn't support monitors of different resolutions, so I don't think they are even close to this yet. Last I heard anyways.
ibeen reading up on monitors lately and i saw a nice benq mid range pricepoint that had a nice adjustable stand so you could put it --- or III ,, ill check tonight about the resolutions to see if i can help more but from what i can remember with eye infinity setup is that all had to be same resolution.(keep in mind this was 5000hd series so a while back and could have been changed with driver updates)

about the sli and connections.

you do not have to turn of the sli you would actually connect all the displays to the main card, the only problem you could have is the if you only have one hdmi then you would have to connect the other via dvi and so on but not usually a problem. also having sli will help with gaming if you decide to game across the 2 if you turn the 2 screen of for gaming then it would not efect at all.

ill see if i can find more info on the resolution and post back , hope it helps

AMD is a bit ahead of Nvidia when it comes to odd monitor arrangements. To my knowledge they don't support this yet. Most people seem to want a "normal" screen in the middle, with a portrait monitor on both ends. I'm not sure anyone is even working on this yet.

Yeah this resolution issue seems to be my biggest roadblock in pulling the trigger. I'm having trouble getting a definitive answer.

Portrait monitor on both ends?!?! That sounds pretty sweet...I want that now.

Thanks for the info guys. Any more is much appreciated

But is surround what he's trying to accomplish? He did say only gaming on one. But just having 2 independent like this can work on any gpu, even intel igpus and can be set in windows.

It's pretty simple in windows screen res options. When you click a monitor, it shows the options for that one. You click the other and it shows the options for that one. Res and orientation are all independent and do not need to match.

Oh wow, so when I hook up the second monitor, I will just set the resolution of each and set landscape for one and portrait for the other? Easy as that?

My main goal is pretty simple really. I just want a vertical screen next to what I have, so that I can drag stuff from my main one and put it over there. I need to be able to view like 14 smallish windows at once.

Also, the driver talk is confusing me a bit. Are you saying NVidia (since I already have 2 970s, I'm not going to switch to AMD) won't be able to handle multiple resolutions?

Thanks guys

dont worrry about the drivers, what i was saying is that i could not set one screen let say 2560x1440 and the other screen at 1920x1080 at that point amd would not let me for eye infinity , from what i read on web you can set up diferent resolutions for diferent monitors at the same time without a problem heres the txt.

I've only ever had matching resolutions once 10+ years ago at 1024x768. Currently my iMac runs at its native 1920x1080 and my second display runs at its native 1680x1050.

The only difference in using different monitors is that the colors will look different and the window sizes and locations will seem to move on you when you switch things between the screens. Won't do anything to games because you'll be working on one monitor then.

so yes you can use the one you have at best resolution posible and get a cheap one for more screen realstate !!! just fallow the instructions

here you get a pic of the procedure !

by the way FOUND AGAIN the monitor i was telling you about , http://shop.benq.us/bl3200pt.html

Input Connector D-sub / DVI / DP1.2 / HDMI / headphone jack / line in
USB Hub Yes, USB2.0*2 / USB 3.0*2 / mini USB*1 (4*downstream, 1*upstream, mini USB for OSD controller)

vote up on the rigth hand of post if it helped! : )

Yes if you just want to attach a monitor it's no problem at all. I've been changing my setup all the time depending on my needs. Went from 3 independent screens, to eyefinity, into two screens, one in landscape and one in portrait mode (now using nvidia). Going nvidia wasn't the reason for the change though.

With a standing desk I find 3 monitors in portrait to be annoying having to turn your head all the time. One portait and one landscape works for me much better. Obviously with a standing desk you need some kind of monitor arms(otherwise monitors are too low), in this case I just went to monoprice, the stands there are cheap but work really well.

Edit: as for monitors there's so many choices. I went with Dell because I got a corporate discount and the stands were fully adjustable (now using vesa mounts as said before).
