I am hoping to buy a laptop but, the most important thing to me is that the hard drive is easily accessible so it can be replaced without the risk of damaging the rest of the laptop. I particularly want to avoid laptops that require you to remove the keyboard and/or motherboard to replace the hard drive. Is there any way I can limit my search to laptops that have the hard drive easily accessible (from the bottom of the laptop)?

pick your laptop or notebook and google for "installing or changing HDD in XXX laptop" - XXX obviously being the model your purchased

there are a ton of pictorial "how to" instructions out there, with a lot of folks wanting to be the first to dissect a new model laptop and posting pictures - that should tell you how easy it will or will not be

i've pulled a few apart and haven't come across one that requires removing the keyboard or motherboard to access the HDD - that doesn't mean there isn't one, it's just that that seems counter-intuitive to the construction / design of a laptop

fwiw

I have an older Sony VAIO that requires exactly that. Have to take off the keyboard to access the drive bay.

Thank you for your reply. I have an old VAIO which was unbelievably badly designed. I had to remove the keyboard and MB and that required disconnecting some extremely flimsy connections. I think one would have needed to have been a brain surgeon to replace the HD w/o damaging the laptop. I'm currently leaning towards Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell or Acer ASpire Q5LJ1.

Thanks,
OH
