Want the Cool without Noise?

Hi all: I've been reading a lot lately about heat sink and cooling fan combinations. As Tom says, the sound level vs the cooling effect of the fan is always a trade off.

But I am looking for a LOW COST solution to this problem. The siverado cooler is quiet, but just too expensive.

THe FOP 38, and others like it, are cool, cheap, but way too loud.

So, Ideas?
Can you make a good adaptor for a larger but cooler fan on a good heatsink, like the new thermal engine heat sink?

Or, what I was really thinking is that if you could get a hold of the fan unit that the siverado uses and put it on to a good heatsink, you would be looking good, low noise and good cooling. But where can you get a fan like that??

Lots of questions but if you have Ideas, Help, Suggestions I would be grateful!

I love my Volcano II. I've used a Chrome Orb, a Core, and CoolerMaster, and have found that the VolcanoII will cool my 1ghz tbird, and be virtually silent.

You can buy the fop38 heatsink without fan, and put a 80mm on it, or make your own heatsink with a drill press or mitre saw. You can make your own waterblock with a dremel and drill.
You can also make your own beer, wine, everclear. Just make sure it's ethanol not methanol.....

Are you sure your hearing is ok? Or maybe you just have an overall very noisy system.

The Volcano II I bought last week is so bloody noisy that I wouldn't dream of using it at standard voltage. Even at 6V it is just bearable. The Everflow is a cheap fan with quality to match.

The sink is ok, though, and the clip mechanism good. Maybe it will be fine once I replace the Everflow with a Papst.

Hey guys, work with me here! No water cooling or alcohol cooling or liquid nitrogen or freon or whatever. I'm tring to come up with a solution that is under $50 bucks that keeps an overclocked Tbird cool AND that is reasonalby quiet. I have just heard tooo much about that 7000 RPM Delta fan that makes too mcuh noise.

Anyone figure out where a guy can get the silverado fan just by itself.

Also, someone said you could put an 80 mm fan on an FOP heat sink. Now you are talking. Is this possible and make it look like something? I have seen a few guys make there own adaptors and the ones I have seen look like crap. Is there a solid professional adaptor available, or at least if one is homemade, sturdy enough to handle the heat and vibration?

You wouldn't exactly have to make an adapter, but it could help by 1C. You can make a duct out of anything, but the plumbing section of the local Home Depo would have the necessary fitting.

no you don't need fans if you have an external source of water (like me).

And no it wasn't 640, that's was the "casual" term, it was really 648

perhaps yours has a different fan, but mine runs around 4800 rpm, and it's pretty darn quiet....

these centrifugal fans are available at radio shack . the ones i have are the gama 28 by nidec, nippon densan corp.
12 volt 0.18 amp 16 cfm.model A34342-16 they are very very quiet. but like the silverado it will take two to do a good job of cooling a processor.
i put all of the info so maybe you can search and find them somewhere else also.
