Want to add a TV as a display

Hi,

ASUS P877-V Pro - Thunderbolt motherboard (1 each of HDMI, DVI, RGB, Thunderbolt)
Dell U2415 Monitors (2)
Samsung TV from a couple years ago

I'm using the HDMI and DVI ports on my motherboard to connect the two Dell monitors in extended mode.

Now I want to add audio and video output from my PC to my Samsung TV (assuming TV will be HDMI in - not sure what I can do on the PC side).

Ideally the TV will be a mirror of my primary display (with audio, too). I'd like a single HDMI cable to carry both audio and video.

What do I need to do make this happen?

Thanks for any advice.

Solution
If your thunderbolt port will send DisplayPort signals and active adapter may be used.

Unfortunately Windows does not like to send audio to more then one device at a time. You would have to swap default devices to send to TV or speakers. Windows can send audio to more than one device at the same time, just not the same thing.

If your TV allowed analog audio in to be used with the HDMI port you may be able to use a Y-Cable to run both analog speakers and the TV at the same time, but that is about it.

Even cooler with 2 DisplayPort cables it looks like you can chain your monitors :)

Not really going to be possible, the best you can hope for with that setup is extended mode and using VGA on your TV. If you must have HDMI for the TV, you're going to need a graphics card that supports 2x DP +1x HDMI (Nvidia 950 and up, AMD 260 and up)

Manual states: "is motherboard comes with multiple VGA output that features desktop extension on
two monitors. You can connect two monitors to any two of the onboard VGA, DVI-D,
HDMI and DisplayPort ports." So even with the thunderbolt to HDMI/DP it might not work as intended.

Here's more info:

For Ivy Bridge, you MUST use DP for primary and secondary monitors, and any of the other connections for the third. By using DVI port, you are limited to just two monitors if the other monitors are anything but DP.

What type of graphics card do your have in your system? I have a Radeon 6970 with DVI, HDMI, and Displayport outputs. I am using two monitors, and one TV. One of the monitors in connected via the DVI port, the other is using the mini displayport port. The TV is connected through the HDMI port. I use my tv to watch programs streamed over the net that are not available with my Roku. I use dual monitors when I'm processing photographs with Adobe Lightroom. AMD's driver package makes this simple. Three different displays with different native resolutions, not a problem.

Thanks for the extra info link.

Forgot to mention one edge case from that link, active converters (like DP to HDMI and DP to VGA) will count as a displayport device rather than VGA/HDMI, but not all motherboards support three displays even then because the non-DP modes are hardwired (which the manual to this one states).

I've had that issue before, and ended up just getting a GFX card for it.

Thanks for all the replies!

I haven't been able to get my Thunderbolt port working for some reason... kinda writing this option off.

So currently for audio on the PC I'm only using a Bluetooth enabled speaker. I guess worst case I could move my speaker from room to room... I hadn't thought of that as an option. It's not the greatest sound, though neither are the speakers that come with the TV (and I use those).

Definitely going to have to get a graphics card then... these that you're recommending are the bottom-end that'll do what I need? I want a quality card but I'm not a gamer.

This tells me I can only mirror all 3 or extend across all 3... bummer. My TV and monitors are in different rooms but share a common wall. I will choose to extend across all 3.

I have an Ivy Bridge processor Intel Core i7-3770K CPu @ 350Ghz so I assume this is why you're telling me I need a graphics card with 2x DP and 1x HDMI and not some other card with like 3 HDMI's or something (I'm making that up... don't know anything about graphics cards).

I am only using the graphics capability from my motherboard right now. If a graphics card makes this work I'll have to get one.

Any specific recommendation for an appropriate graphics card for my application? (Not a gamer... don't want to buy garbage... don't have a lot of excess cash)

Thanks again, everyone!

If your TV uses DLNA/Miracast, why not just use Windows 10 and connect over the network?

If it's a cheaper one/older TV, getting something like the Nvidia 750 or AMD 260 should be fine, you can get them for ~100-120, and they have all sorts of configurations for everything from 2x DP + 1x HDMI to 2XHDMI+DVI. Just make sure to read the manual for a model you're interested in to make sure they support your intended configuration.

Well, I hadn't heard of DNLA/Miracast before so I spend a couple hours playing/investigating... turns out my TV does support DLNA and I can get it to share media but I want to be able to operate my computer and not just view media files (when connected my TV will only display media files and doesn't give me my desktop... just access to some media folders. I've found some ways that show it's possible to use DLNA to display the desktop but they all non-native (e.g. a bit hacky) and seem to have a few seconds of lag and I don't want lag.

I'll start researching video cards... I did a quick scan and haven't found anything in the $100 - $120 range yet with 2 x DP + 1 HDMI... thanks again ... I'll keep digging

Newegg no longer sells the 750, only 750TI it seems. 2xDP is actually one connector using MST (which your monitors support) anyway though. If you want to be on the safe side, AMD370/Nvidia 950 should have independent connectors if you search.
