Recently acquired a second monitor with no DVI port. My graphics card has one HDMI output, and my motherboard has another. I should note that I have two HDMI cables. Ive tried simply plugging them both in and nothing happens. Thanks.
The GTX 970 includes other types of video outputs on the graphics card. An adapter is available to convert DisplaPort or DVI-D to HDMI. They are inexpensive.
It is not possible as far as I know. You would need to invest in an identical GPU and use it in SLI/Crossfire if your motherboard has another PCIe slot.

Crikey. That seems like an awfully expensive option, considering I have a GTX 970. Is there really nothing else I can do?
Generally the video outputs on the motherboard are disabled in the BIOS when a graphics card is installed. The Auto setting in the BIOS graphics setting can be set to integrated, but then the graphics card will be disabled.

Good point. I totally forgot about adapters. Thanks for pointing that out.
Auto, peg and igpx is initiate graphics, not what is on or off. Most mobos have an option to enable the igpu with a dgpu. Using an adapter would be simpler to deal with a single gpu driver but you could always save a few bucks and time for shipping.
