Want to jump to 1440p, sell my GTX 770 for an R9 290x or a GTX 970?

So i really want to make the leap to 1440p, as my 1080p tn monitor is getting older and is just so dull to look at. Only problem is, I know my 770 doesn't have enough Vram to run games smoothly in 1440p. I think the gtx 980 is really overpriced, so what should i do? Get a 970 or a 290x? Both are priced about the same, which would you snag? Thanks!

Bonus question: Will a PLS panel look better colors-wise than a TN?

Go with a 970.

TN panels are affordable, but are not known for vibrant colors. Yes PLS will definitely look better.

Anyway if the choices is limited to 290x / 970.

You running on single monitor? 970 definitely Awesome.
But if you going to dual monitor, 290x definitely would be better.

Nope2x, even in two monitors, the 970 will be good, the only thing you will encounter significant problem is when you play at higher resolution. i.e. 1440p at maximum settings.
