I recently purchased a new desktop with Win 8 preinstalled. However, I have much unfinished work on my old hdd from my other desktop which runs on Win 7. I was planning to just swop out the hdd's but when I put my Win 7 hdd in the new desktop it says "no operating system found" when booting up. Is there any way I can get the new desktop to recognise the win 7 hdd. I really don't feel like re-installing all the software which I use on my Win 7 hdd onto the Win 8 drive.

Hey there lynnro.

If you have unfinished projects or other files you want to backup, I'd recommend that you connect the old drive as a secondary HDD and boot from the Win 8 drive. This way, you'd be able to transfer all files you need to work on.

As for booting to Windows with the old drive and the pre-installed OS, I'm afraid this won't happen. This is not possible unless the the motherboards of the 2 computers are pretty similar or the exact same model and even in cases like these, it's not guaranteed to work.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.
