Hello everyone. I am getting pretty sick of my AMD a10 6800k and want to upgrade. However unknown to me(first pc i have ever built) I bought a dead socket type. I want to change but I am on an OEM os which i just upgraded to win10, but I hear I will run into issues if I change motherboards. When searching on this topic I can never find a straight answer. I want to know if it's possible or if it isn't what can I do to make it happen.

Thanks for your time.

From MY PERSONAL experience you can simply swap out the Motherboard and the OS should auto config to adjust for the new components. Although you MAY run into issues in which you must call Microsoft to receive a new valid key. But those seem to be less likely.

If you want to change sockets your going to have to drop some serious cash, I say that because not only will you have to pay for your new cpu and mobo but also Win 10. It is possible for you to ask microsoft for a new product key but is pretty unlikely they'll give one to you. The reason that you have to get a new windows product key is because when you install a windows operating system it will bind to your motherboard so if you change motherboards they won't treat your copy of windows normally even though it's 100% genuine. Hope that helped

I had switched from an AMD board to an intel board no problem, thus why I say MY experience.

Are you running OEM os? If so which one?

I have built a few computers now. I know switching sockets will be expensive but this apu doesnt quite fufill my needs anymore. Mb and CPU combos are pricey but its time
