OK guys! I currently have an i5 2500k and this thing has been badass. Got it 4 years ago and I just kept upgrading the GPU from my first GPU idk what it was to a gtx 660ti to a gtx 970 and the CPU handles everything so well! Im wanting to upgrade my CPU to handle the future of GPU's so what should I do? should I get an I5 6500 or i7 6700k for 150$ more to handle future GPU's? Im looking at benchmarks and the i5 2500 is awesome compared to the i5 6500. Infact the i5 6500 is only 1.15 times better = 15%! But the I7 6700k is 1.5 better than the I5 2500 +50% better. God IDK what to do : /

TLDR: I want to upgrade my CPU and want it to last as long as my badass i5 2500k has lasted me! What should I do?

While the performance benchmarks will show the i7 as being better (because of multi threading), gaming benchmarks don't show much difference at all between i7 6700K and the i5 6600K. Just found a video that shows this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw-qyZB8qtk

Update. The point I'm making is that for gaming you don't need an i7 and that CPU benchmarks which show one being better than the other doesn't mean it will be any better at gaming.

The i7 is only 1.5x better because of it's hyperthreading (in multi core-operation) and you won't need that for most games. If you are at a GTX970 at the moment and you want to stay with that for some time, then you can always buy the new CPU the same time you want to swap the GPU. So you can pass a few CPU generations and buy a new one instead of buying a CPU now, that is old the time you swap the GPU. The i5 2500k should be good for a year or two.

simple, if you don't have a aftermarket cpu cooler get one and overclock the 2500k to 4.5ghz

no point in wasting money when it could go towards a better gpu
