Wanting to buy a low/mid-range gaming laptop

Hey folks,

First-time poster looking for some help from the community. I'm looking to buy a laptop for general use plus light gaming. In terms of gaming, the most common use is going to be a secondary World of Warcraft platform, though it would be nice to be able to put other games on it for mobility - I'm thinking Skyrim and D3 off the top of my head (spot the fantasy fan!).

In my head, I'm looking for a system with at least a Core i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and a dedicated GPU, but I can't quite find anything I really like the look of. My budget is about €800.

I've been looking for weeks and I feel like I'm going a bit insane. I keep coming back to this Gigabyte laptop: http://tinyurl.com/kbs5g28 and I was hoping to get some feedback on it.

I'm wondering whether the price is reasonable and whether the specifications are suitable for how I would be using it. I would absolutely love if you could either confirm that I'm looking for the right kind of specifications or explain to me why exactly I'm being an idiot...!

It would also be awesome if you could suggest any alternative places to buy a laptop. I live in Ireland and I just can't find anywhere here beyond Currys/PC World and the like. I've used Overclockers before, but they don't have anything within my budget this time around.

For gaming, you really would want 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD.

The one in the link is a great laptop. If you can find a laptop that's got GTX 850M or even higher would be great!

Thanks for the feedback - it's nice to know I'm not going out of my mind. I've built two desktops from components over the years but the last one was about five years ago - the new information running around was taking a long time to go into my head.

We're going to take the plunge and buy the laptop. One question I do have, though: will it support an external monitor running at 1920x1080? I currently run my desktop on this monitor and was thinking that it might be nice to have something similar connected to the laptop.

Also, I'm not sure on the upgrade potential in this machine. One of the reasons I wanted a laptop with a dedicated GPU was that an iGPU could only be upgraded by upgrading the CPU. Is there somewhere I can find out about upgrade options for this machine? I'm thinking specifically: GPU/CPU/RAM/SSD - obviously I wouldn't be doing all of these at once or even necessarily at all, but I'd like to know my options!

I would say that the laptop is good but I would get 2 4 gig ram sticks rather than 1 8 gig as the gpu can then perform in dual channel mode which will increase fps rates. As for the upgrades I don't really know this brand very well.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have any control over the specs of the laptop - it comes as-is. I was thinking that running 1x8GB stick would give me the option in the future of adding a second 8GB stick.

Would the performance boost be worth actually replacing the 8GB stick when the laptop arrives?

Actually, it's been proven that 1 stick of 8GB is fine for gaming. It doesn't really mean that it'll perform better.

An 8GB is still an 8GB regardless of how many sticks you add to it.

That laptop is perfectly fine.

Get the HP Pavilion 15-P077TX

That GTX 840 will be a lot better than that 820.

Also, for gaming, you'll only need an i5 instead of an i7.

Get an i7 if you're going to be doing some photo and video editing.
