I am interested in upgrading my CPU which is currently AMD A4-7300. I was intending on getting an AMD FX 8350 however when I looked at compatible CPUs for my motherboard (GA-F2A78M-HD2) it says only AMD A series processors and AMD Athlon™ series processors. Can someone confirm the CPU I want to buy is non-compatible for my motherboard or if it's a different story. Thanks.

Solution
FX-8350 is not compatible.
Here is a list of supported processors for your motherboard:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-F2A78M-HD2-rev-30#support-cpu

Your processor is a dual core.
Probably, a 4 core X4-860K would be your best upgrade.

To get a performance metric, search for the passmark performance numbers of the candidates.

Your platform is really not upgradeable very far.

It might be best to restart with a modern ryzen or intel processor.
For example, $200 buys you a better performing G5600 processor, motherboard and 8gb of ddr4 ram for starters.
Such an upgrade has vast future upgrade options.

thanks for replying. so in order for me to install the fx 8350 i would have to get a new motherboard or is it better to just get a compatible cpu (e.g A10 7870K) even though it may not be as good as a deal ? i don't really care about having top specs i just want an overall improvement.

ok thank you for the help, i'll be needing this much advice as i can get haha

of course am3+ cpu's will perform better than your current fm2_+

I wouldn't waste any money on such an old platform. Get yourself something new, that has an actual upgrade path.
