Hello,
I want to upgrade my CPU in my Dell Optiplex 745 Tower. I've downloaded CPU-Z from CPUID, but I'm not sure about certain things. How do I find out which socket type I have? On the CPU tab, in the 'Package' bit it says 'Socket 775 LGA'. Is this my socket type? On the 'Mainboard' tab, in the 'Chipset' bit, it says Intel Q965. Which one is the actual socket type? I think it's Socket 775 LGA, but I'm not sure.
Thanks,
Ben.

Solution
Yes, you have a socket lga775.
What is not certain is what cpu upgrades your particular motherboard will support.
You may need a bios update to support a stronger cpu.
The reading I see limits your upgrade to a E6600.
They sell for about $20 on ebay and is not much of an upgrade.
Even the cheapest $50 intel haswell cpu is about 3x faster.
It might be time to consider a motherboard/cpu/ram upgrade.
