Wanting to upgrade to 2560x1440, system sufficient?

After seeing the dell 27" ips 1440p monitors on display im really itching to upgrade my crappy westinghouse 27" lcd. Being that I do play some fps games and mmos im not sure if I have the system to properly make use of 2560x1440 though. Should I just upgrade my crappy 1080p lcd to a 1080p ips display or go full out on a 2560x1440? Or can my core i7 950 and gtx 670 not handle that?

the 670 will probably be fine, you may have to turn down from ultra to high. the processor should be fine.

You should be fine. Of course performance depends on the actual game. Click following link for GTX 670 benchmarks. The closest resolution is 2560x1600 which has 11% more pixels than 2560x1440. Therefore, estimated FPS will probably be anywhere from 5% - 11% higher at the lower resolution; performance does not always scale up linearly. Note that the test rig has an Intel Core i7-3770K @ 4.6 GHz.

The GTX 670 is a great card and will handle that resolution. Remember though resolution is a big determining factor in performance so if you see slow down you might have to go from ultra to high but the higher resolution will make up for it. What fpses? There is a huge performance difference between Far Cry 3 and Counter Strike source. Also from what I gather most mmos are not that intense (or at least as intense as the benchmark games such as Crysis 3).

Last few fps that i played are Far Cry 3, Metro 2033, playing through crysis 3 right now. I played FC3 and Metro on my old HD 5850, the performance increase from the 670 has been fantastic. I also play Planetside 2, and the MMO that i play is FFxiv which can be pretty taxing. I guess I could overclock my cpu more, its at a very conservative 3.07 ghz. Now i just need to decide if i should get a korean panel or spring for a more spendy A+ model.

Your system should be fine.

With a denser display, you may find that you can reduce your level of anti aliasing, or eliminate it altogether without any impact on image processing.
Since AA is one to the factors that is hard for a graphics card to do, you may actually find that you get higher FPS along with better image quality.
