Hey Guys,

Using PCPartPicker, there are some warnings that are coming up for my build. I am trying to have two SSDs and then two other large mechanical hard drives. Am I really going to have any issues with 2 of these NVME solid states using up the SATA 6.0 GB/s ports? And how will I know which ports to connect the mechanical hard drives to?

Motherboard: https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/Z390-DESIGNARE-rev-10#kf

Setup I would like:
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Western Digital Ultrastar 8 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Western Digital Ultrastar 8 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Potential Issues / Incompatibilities
  • Warning!1 additional SATA 3 Gb/s compatible port is needed.
  • Warning! Some Intel Z390 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using 32 GB RAM modules.
  • Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.
  • Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #2 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.

Probably yes.
There are 2x M.2 ports, and 6x SATA ports.
You need to refer to the motherboard user manual to determine the allowable configurations.

I think I figured it out, if someone could take a peak and confirm that I am understanding this correctly.

Am I safe to add the mechanical hard drives to the SATA3 1, 2, or 3 ports?

I took a screenshot of the motherboard manual and added some notes. See link below:

Thanks for confirming!
