I'm going to be buying a i7 7700k CPU and was wondering what a good water cooler for it is, any suggestions? getting a Z270 gaming M3 mother board if that matters? never have used water cooling before

Here are few points about your plan:
1. mid-high end air coolers (45-90$) do better cooling at lower noise than a 240 AiOs and even 280 AiOs on the higher end (noctua starting at U12S).
2. an i5-8600K + Z370 would be better idea unless you are getting 7700K for under 250$. 6 real cores are better than 4 physical and 4 virtual.

what USAFRet and n0ns3ns3 have said - i'm running a noctura NH-U14S cooler and even in 1 hour long video rendering jobs with the cpu running at 92-97%, i'm seeing max temps of 65C on one core, others at 58-64C. Why introduce the possibility of a water leak in your case and frying everything when there's no gain or return for the risk?

That NH-U14S is $62 on amazon, and hell, even the D15 monster is only $89
