Solution
If the question is whether the system was worth $500 in 2004, then I would say yes.

1GB of RAM was actually above average in 2004. Most systems only had 512MB at the time. Some high-end enthusiast systems had 2GB or more, but 1GB was more than enough to run any game at the time. A Radeon 9600 Pro was lower-mid-range, and the Celeron was lower-end.

By today's standards, the system is pretty low end, and not worth much, but in 2004 it would have been worth at least $500.

According to this: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/11/how-cheap-ram-changes-computing/

1GB of Ram would have cost somewhere between 100 and 1000 in 2004 (scale is log so tricky to pin down) but lets say 100, for 20% of the overall cost of the machine. My machine from Uni running 3.11, only had 24MB of ram.

Back then in 2004, I was still running around with Pentium 3 800eb with 512MB RAM, 20GB HDD and GeForce FX5200LE.
hehehehe...
Man! it was a long time ago.

BTW,
I think your Celeron PC is not that bad for USD500. We are talking about the USD500 back then yes? If you bought that PC for USD500 today...well...someone tricked you.
