Question Washed out display after latest Windows 10 update - now no video display or POST screen ?

Hi all,

My machine is just over 2 years old - no problems at all until tonight.

Windows updated to the latest build (Windows 10). And after this, the display was all washed out in some spots, over saturated in others.

Did the usual and updated the NVIDIA drivers, rebooted, still the same,

I then saw in a Windows support thread that someone had fixed this by deleting the monitor profile within windows.

Did this - restarted and now, nothing. Nothing on the screen, no Post screen. I can see the PC is booting up, but I am getting no display.

I've tried different ports on the TV, different cables etc. I can rule this out, as the Xbox works on all ports etc.

I cannot get into safe mode or anything without a display, as my machine is running a 5900X which has no integrated GPU.

My GPU is an RTX 3070 and only has the one HDMI output slot I do have a VGA I could attempt to try if I can borrow another monitor and cable to see, but surely there is a way to get into POST at least?

Has anyone else had anything similar? I would like to avoid having to send the whole thing back for a warranty. If it's a driver or system conflict, it won't be covered anyway. I can't believe the card would have just gone bad after 2 years - especially when I am just using it for video editing / a few games.

Things I've done:

Updated GPU official drivers to try and fix initial error
Deleted monitor/display profile within windows to attempt to fix initial error
Tried known working HDMI cables/ports
TV is working - works with console with same HDMI input / Cable.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you restart the PC, does it come up saying no input detected or just a black screen?
If it's no input detected, something isn't right with the connectivity from the PC to the TV.
If it's just a black screen, it's booting but just getting hung up somewhere.

1) Reboot again and immediately after rebooting, start spamming the key used to enter the BIOS normally. Keep pressing it repeatedly until you either enter the BIOS or you get a keyboard error. Most likely, you will enter the BIOS.
2) If that doesn't work, restart again, immediately after restart, press and hold down the left SHIFT key. Keep holding it until the screen changes (which should take you into Advanced Startup).
2.1) If you're able to finally get into Safe Mode, download and run DDU, completely remove any and all graphics drivers, and install the latest version of said drivers for your GPU.

The first step is identifying whether its hardware or software. So you could disconnect all of your drives and see if that lets you boot into bios since that's all there is to boot into. If booting into bios works, then the next step is booting a usb stick containing either the windows installer or a linux distro. This would let you determine if the rest of your hardware works and if you get a display from one of those at least you'll know your gpu and monitor are OK. After that you'll have to make some decisions about possibly reinstalling windows and how much essential stuff is on your drive that needs to be rescued before doing that.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I was getting no output to the TV at all, as in I'd get the "No signal" message on screen.

However, I have managed to fix this - don't ask me why, but removing the CMOS battery and leaving it disconnected for 10/15 mins, then putting the battery back in seemed to fix it. Absolutely running fine now.

Glad it was not a hardware issue - I'm guessing that the update messed up a colour profile or created a conflict with the NVIDA driver - and then guessing something messed up when I deleted the Monitor profile within Windows.

No idea why the fix worked, but I'm obviously happy it did. If anyone has any theories, then I'm all ears on that. Be useful to know if this happens in the future or to help others with a similar Ryzen/Nvidia set up.

Thanks again :)
