My C3C game started with animations for movements. Now, late in the
game moves happen in a flash. I have checked prefs, and 'show moves'
etc are all still checked. Is it a corrupted save file, or something I
have done?
I have always tended to play with animations on as being the only sure
way to know where the enemy has moved on to. I shall finish the game,
but as it stands, it's not as fun/easy to play.

I have had some problems in the past with preferences not setting
themselves properly in between games. For instance I remember having
my grid and city view get stuck forever opposite of what I wanted. I
would change them and they would change back again the next game.

All the information is stored in conquests.ini. Your settings are
stored here:
Preferences=00001101110111001010011111111110
Perhaps with some internet searches you can figure out which setting
to turn on or off. One is likely on or true. If you find the ini is
valid that it could be a save game problem. Like I said I had this
happen once but I can't remember exactly how I solved it. I either
edited the ini or went back to a previous save game.

Make sure your 'caps lock' key is not on.

The Preferences slelection on the main menu is what is in effect when you
start a new game. Any changes you make 'in game' are for that game only.
Perhaps checking the 'default for new cities' will change the main menu
preferences, though i haven't tested it.

Thank you. I have tested it, and confirm it was probably the 'caps
lock' key. Knocking 'caps lock' during AI moves after a short pause
causes AI moves to continue as fast blur.

I have a page of shortcuts from civfanatics site, I hadn't thought to
look, but having now checked, this 'caps lock' action is not amongst
them. Again something new for me.

Of course my clever cordless keyboard has no lights to indicate caps
lock status.

It's in the readme file.
