Water Cooling Questions

I'm creating my first custom water cooled rig so I have a few questions that I haven't been able to solve.

1. I'm looking for a Biocide to add to my loop in order to prevent algae, gunk, and etc. from accumulating in the loop. As of now I'm looking to purchase a bottle of Nuke -PHN Concentrated Biocide. I also know that I can use a kill coil. So my question is which is more effect, a kill coil or liquid biocide, and if I want to can I use both? Also where can I purchase a kill coil?

2. I'm also looking for an Ant-Corrosive. Anyone have any suggestions on what's best to buy?

3. What are your opinions on Mayhem's dyes? Most reviews I see say that their dye doesn't tend to gunk up any loops.

Solution
1. Speaking only from what I read.... most peeps seem to prefer the silver coil thingie

2. Dunno much here .... Feser Base Corrosion Blocker

3. Stay away from the Aurora....nice for shows but supposedly can gunk up system over time. Again most die hard WC heads will tell ya nuthing but distilled water. But most disaster stories seem to be anecdotal. I haven't heard of any bad actual "user experiences" with the Mayems Pastel coolants...

Thanks for the answers, but would it be dangerous in anyway to use both a liquid biocide and a silver kill coil? Also I wasn't going to use the Aurora as that is a coolant, and I'll be using distilled water. Mayhem does however sell dyes separately for which you can put into your loop and I'd like to know if they can gunk up my loop.

I'm finding the stickies a bit outdated in parts.....and in some cases anecdotal. Reminds me of the "never let ya laptop battery fully discharge" mantra which is still repeated today though it's long been outdated not applying to current battery technology. But as no one ever reads their manuals where it instructs ya to do exactly that every 30 cycles, peeps still repeat it.

Not that I don't appreciate the effort that was put into them. Science after all is science and the laws of chemistry, thermodynamics and fluid flow don't change. However, in some instances, I think some of the "long held wisdom" needs another look. A lot has changed today.... you can get a CPU say up to 4.7 on air and adding WC really isn't going to get you much further. Methinks many people doing it today just do for the challenge and aesthetics play as important a role in many instances as temperature control.

For example, I have researched some of the prepared coolants used and spoken to peeps using them and so far no one using recent stuff has experienced the major disasters that are rumored with "anything but distilled water". Look at the Aurora coolant videos on youtube for example and you'll see dozens of posts about it "lasting" for at most 2 days. Yet do a bit of searching and you find peeps who left PC off for 5 weeks while going away on vacation ..... came back, turned on PC and all was perfectly fine. He goes onto say in the comments that he had it in for 8 or 9 months and found no fouling or gunk buildup at all. He then took it out .... stored it .... and then used it in a different build. He did see some minor settlement when he took outta storage but didn't say how long it was there.

Now I am NOT suggesting that anyone use the aurora coolant.... I'm saying that some of the internet posts that we oft stated with confident authority sometimes have no basis in fact or have been rendered non-applicable due to advances in technology.

The new Asus Formula Mobo has an aluminum WC heatsink which is 1st anodized and then coated. Many forum posters are up in arms about this "disaster" and frankly I don't see an issue. First, if water truly is distilled, then there's no ions..... and w/o ions, there's no possibility of galvanic corrosion. Yes, it will pick up ions over time from contamination but proper coatings or blockers can in fact render this irrelevant **if** properly done. Frankly I'm not at all worried about it and apparently neither is Asus as they have a 3 year warranty program that could put nice financial hit on them if these things start failing left and right.

In short, all I am saying is always question absolutes.... what was true at one point in time oft turns out to be set aside by someone with a good idea. Do ya research and try and find a the actual "science" behind the postings.
