Thanks to all those who came last week to what is turning out to be a
really interesting showdown for all various playgroups in the UK.
Already we've had representatives from Staines, London, Cambridge, and
the home crowd attend. This month we had showers from Portsmouth,
Reading, and Southampton too. It would be nice to see someone from
every playgroup in the UK show up for an event before the year is
out...
17 people showed this time for one of the most fascinating days of VTES
I'd seen in quite a while. With Gehenna still causing people to stroke
chins, we are starting to see more and more varied and interesting
decks showing up, and fair play to everyone I don't think I saw any
game with two identical decks - this was something we used to see a lot
of, but now it's practically unheard of!
Intercept seemed to be the way of the day, and we saw intercept decks
causing the most damage all day. Special nod to Rob Thompson and his
Toreadors + Guns intercept effort and Rob Treasure's "Rachel Bradywine
stomps everyone" deck, but I saw at least another 3 intercept decks
floating around, plus there were some in games I didn't see. Maybe
until the dust settles everyone was playing it safe?
After 3 rounds, the top 5 players were...
Rob Treasure (9VP, 2TW)
Ant Coleman (8 VP, 2 TW)
Hugh Angseesing (5VP, 1 TW)
Richard Gentle (4.5 VP, 1 TW)
Rob Thompson (4.5VP, 1 TW)
Order was (from starting):
Hugh Angseesing (Lasombra sneak with Votes)
Ant Coleman (Turbo Warghoul)
Richard Gentle (Ahrimanes Votes)
Rob Treasure (Rachel Brandywine the bulletstopper)
and
Rob Thompson (Toreadors with guns Intercept)
It was an INCREADIBLY long final - nearly 4 hours! - and was very slow
to open up. Ant was public enemy no.1 for much of the game simply due
to the threat of the War Ghouls he was pumping out. He got to about 3
at one stage, but it was enough to instill fear in the table. Rob
Thompson loaded up on guns, Rob Treasure sat around with a Madness
Network and enough AUS malks to scare everyone, and Hugh got steadily
pummelled by Ghouls and Toreadors alike. Rick Gentle seemed to be the
week link for much of the game as he seemed incapable of doing ANYTHING
- with only limited stealth va Rob and little combat defence vs Ant, he
did appear largely boned.
However, despite a weak deck given the circumstances, Rick was not the
first to go... Ant was shown the door by a succession of cheeky votes
and bleeds from Hugh (largely to save his neck by giving him pool
enough to stay in the game!) and thus the game opened. With little to
save him, Rick went forward full tilt and was swiftly pounded out, and
Rob Thompson decked himself trying to block every one of Rob Treasures
actions. The net result was Rob Treasure and Hugh fighting for the
finish.
After whittling down from both sides, Hugh made one brave move. He had
Gratiano (a Cardinal in this gave, with 6 votes on the one vampire!)
and Polonia against Rob's Rachel Brandywine, Huang, Zoe, and Victoria.
Rob had also just brought in Gregor at the end of his turn. Until this
point, Hugh had voting superiority throughout the whole game due to
Gratiano and the Power Structure. With both players down to 3 pool (or
thereabouts), Hugh tried a bleed with Gratiano, but got blocked and
torpoised. Then he called a KRC with Polonia using all the stealth he
had. Rob ran out of intercept! Hugh AND Rob both thought that Hugh had
won... until they realised with No Gratiano, Hugh could only muster 4
votes - not enough to win the vote. Tapped out, Rob bled for 3 to win.
It was, in Rob's own words, "the tighest and most interesting final he
had played in years". It certainly seemed it!
So, the league table now looks like this:
Rank Name League Points GW's VPs
1 Anthony Coleman 9 4 15
2 Richard Gentle 8 2 8.5
3 David Hammond 7 2 9.5
4 Ross Howard 7 0 5
5 Rafe Ball 7 0 1.5
6 Brian White 6 0 1.5
7 Rob Treasure 5 2 12
8 Hugh Angseesing 4 1 7
9 Rob Thompson 4 1 4.5
10 Mike Nudd 3 1 4
11 Simon Caldwell 3 1 3
12 James Coupe 3 0 2
13 John Keech 3 0 1
13 Carolyn Caldwell 3 0 1
13 Steve Read 3 0 1
14 Jenny Hammond 3 0 0.5
14 Terrance Hinds 3 0 0.5
14 Frank Connell 3 0 0.5
15 Richard Gentle Jnr 3 0 0
15 Chris Hills 3 0 0
Ant Coleman, although WAY out in front, is still not necessarily in the
clear, since it can all change in the space of a tournament.
The Next event is scheduled on the 27th March - EASTER SUNDAY. I know
that many people are not too keen, but if at least 10 players are
intending to come, I will still aim to hold it. Please register your
interest in the next 7 days either to my email
(princeofwatford@hotmail.com) or to this forum so I can establish if it
is going to happen.
All the best
Dave
