I never had this issue before, it just came up. I have had this asus monitor for about 4 years now. It has a VGA cord and that is all it takes, I am not sure what the model is. There have been these small, horizontal faint lines that go up the screen. It becomes very clear to see them when the back ground is semi dark. This is happening on my desktop and in game. I tired to enable nividia vsync and triple buffering and it did not do anything. These lines appear to be white but very faint like I said

lcd monitors don't do burn-ins like the old crt monitors did. try the monitor on another computer to see if those lines are still there which I think they will be.
There are two possibilities that I can think of. The first is burn-in of the display. This refers to leaving something displayed for long periods of time. For example if you leave windows solitaire displayed on the screen, you will eventually see the borders of the cards displayed on the screen as you described.

The other involves the degradation of the graphics card. Before the graphics card dies, it is quite common to see horizontal lines on the screen (or streaks).

If burn-in is the culprit, a screen saver program will help. If the graphics card is the problem, then eventually the graphics card will need to be replaced.

It must be burn-in to display. I just replaced my graphics card with a new 760 a few weeks ago and I did not have this issue till now. I was planning on getting myself a 1080p monitor anyway. I do shut down my monitor when its not in use and I have a screen saver on it though.
