Ways to capture images

I been trying to build a small computer to recognize objects by capturing them. I was wondering ways I could capture images besides webcams, but have to be portable

I want a something that scans trading cards for a product I am working on. I just wanted to know what options I have to solve my card scanning problem.

wouldnt need 3d scanning then

sounds like just a decent photo from a mobile phone would do

if all it has to do is recognise the image and identify it from a finite number of cards
