WD 100gb - making it 120gb?

In Tom's review of the Western Digital 100 gb and 120 gb drives, he mentions that they both use 3 40 gb platters. The only difference would likely be different firmware and possibly some QA testing.....

So... does this mean I could somehow turn my 100 gb drive into a 120 gb drive??

Any thoughts on this? Can I somehow update the firmware on my drive to do this?

Thanks.

Possibly, i'd say at the least you would have to low-level format it with the WD120 tool from WD. But i'm really just guessing on this.

It prolly wont let you, unless you could somehow rewrite the firmware with that from a 120, which aint easy =)

I do not know of any software tool tht would allow you to flash the bios. If possible you would prolly have to write your own flash utility, and even then you would need the bios from the 120 to know what to edit/enter into the bios. As far as I know it would not be practical to try. If you could get it to work it prolly would not be worth the trouble!
