The drive is an older version of passport. works fine on an old pc with windows 10 installed but when I try to use it to transfer data to my W7, 6 months old desk top and ligt comes on, it tones, appears in the safely remove Hardware box but not in disc management.

Hey there Paul and welcome to the community!

As there's an issue with a drive, of course the first step should be (as usual) to backup any important data which you might have on it, just to be on the safe side. After that I'd recommend that you check the drive with DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostics). Run both test (Quick and Extended) to make sure that everything is OK with the HDD itself. Here's how to do it: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows. I'd also recommend that you try a different external drive with the Windows 7 computer if possible, to see if the same thing happens. You could reinstall its USB driver and try to connect the HDD again. Try all the USB ports as well.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman

Thnx. After posting I connected it back to the old pc again where it works fine still. Before doing that on the new pc I tried different ports and cables with same result. The PC recognises the hardware but can't read the data. I'll try DLG but its probably easier to buy a new drive and use that rather than buy a new drive, back up the data to it and try and fix the old one ;-)

Could it be a driver issue - how do you retro fit a driver to a disk you can't read?

Yes, as I've mentioned you could try to reinstall the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller's driver, or update it. There might be nothing to fix if everything's OK with the drive itself. The issue might be related to the computer with W7 (OS, USB port, driver, etc). What were the results of the DLG tests?

Hi Boogieman and thnx again. The desk top on which it doesn't work is a few months old (I have resisted installing W10) with 8 ports that I interchange perfectly with various vibtage passport drives - no problem there.

I put the suspect drive back on the old pc where it works fine (and bought a new passport for the newer pc) and will run the DLG test from there. Clearly it needs repair as it has backed up data from the older pc that won't be able to be extracted if anything happens there.
