So i am thinking of getting this ssd stated above, along with the gigabyte b450 d3sh. On the motherboard website, it says that m2 ssds only work if there is an athlon cpu or in the amd a 7 series. Does this mean that i cannot use an amd ryzen 5 2600 with this ssd on the mobo? If so, would i be able to use an m2 pcie ssd?

Solution

---------------------------
1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe x4/x2* SSD support)
  • Actual support may vary by CPU.
  • Supports only M.2 SATA SSDs when using an AMD Athlon™-series/ 7th Gen. A-series or Athlon™ X4 APU.
---------------------------

What this says is that if you have an Athlon CPU on that board, it can only use a SATA M.2 drive, not an NVMe drive.
If you have a Ryzen CPU, you can use either an NVMe OR SATA M.2 drive.

NVMe/PCIe = Samsung 970 EVO or Intel 660p M.2.
SATA = Samsung 860 EVO M.2.

Which specific drive? You did not list one.

Welcome to the forums my friend!

This M.2 slot is both SATA and PCIE interface compatible - what it's saying here is that if you only have an AMD Athlon series or 7th Gen A - Series then only the SATA interface element will work.

In other words, SATA M.2s will work regardless as to the CPU.
NVME M.2s will only work with better than the Athlon/ A Series - so you'd basically need a Ryzen CPU for NVME M.2s.
