I just received a WD black 1tb from amazon. but as soon as I put it in and migrate my data. It started making very loud grinding noises. the grinding noises are unbearable. I know blacks make quite a bit of noise but I'm not sure if this is normal or not. a lot of changes in the sound of the grinding.the SMART readings are all good.

this is what it sounds like but a little quieter. all the noises you hear in there are just the hard drive and nothing else.

I'm thinking about returning it but I'm not sure if it is actually faulty.

thank you.

Welcome to the TH Community, @acmasta!

I'm sorry to hear about these concerning noises coming from the WD Black! 🙁 They definitely do not sound good! Since the WD Black is relatively new, you should definitely consider RMA-ing it and getting a replacement from the reseller's or our Customer Support. However, I'd check the warranty here first. I'd strongly advise you to back up all important data from the WD Black elsewhere as soon as possible and then run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from our Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows just in case and see what the SMART attributes say about the drive's health.

Either way, don't trust any important files with this particular HDD until you get it...
